If you look at the battles waged for oil imagine what people will do for water...
Let's look at some of the facts and figures:
the 20% of people who live in the "developed" world consume almost 75% of the world's fresh water (Americans use 600 litres per day, Europeans 250 and Africans 30).
Of the 6.5 billion people on our planet 1.2 billion do not have access to drinking water.
If no action is taken, in less than 20 years, 3 billion people will suffer from water shortage.
What are the consequences of these figures? Development Alternatives, a non-profit organisation esetablished in 1983 explains that:
| Every year more than five million human beings die from illness linked to unsafe drinking water and sanitation. Improved access to safe water supply and appropriate sanitation can also improve the economic status, mainly through saving large amounts of people’s time and energy. It is a matter of concern that despite the progress made with water supply, the level of water-related sickness continues to be high. 70-80 % of illnesses are related to water contamination and poor sanitation. |
