Deep ecology is a ecosophy or branch of ecological philosophy that places such importance on species and ecosystems that it goes beyond most environmental schools of thought and views humankind as an integral part of nature. The result is a new system of environmental ethics that holds an uncompromising doctrine of biospheric egalitarianism as a core principle.
Deep ecology describes itself as "deep" because it is concerned with fundamental philosophical questions about the role of human life as one part of the ecosphere, rather than with a narrow view of ecology as a branch of biological science, and aims to avoid merely utilitarian environmentalism.

"Deconstructive postmodernism does not appear to encourage intense
attention to the natural world, and for the most part we have expected
little leadership in ecological matters from those who follow it.
Perhaps the greatest importance of this book is that in signals a
change. The joining of deconstructive analysis of our heritage and the
love of our fellow creatures contributes richly to this collection.
Those of us who believe that of all the crises we humans face, the
ecological one is the most fundamental, can only rejoice at the infusion of new insight and energy into the call for a fundamental re-orientation of our psyches and our societies."
